A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a medical imaging test that measures bone density and body composition, including fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral content. It is considered one of the most accurate methods for body composition analysis.

DEXA scans are beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including athletes seeking to optimise their performance through detailed body composition analysis, individuals trying to lose weight or build muscle efficiently, and those at risk of osteoporosis who need bone density monitoring.

It is best to avoid strenuous exercise >12 hours beforehand, not consume alcohol <12 hours beforehand, and be in a fasted state as these can all impact the results. It is encouraged to be well hydrated from the day before, but avoid drinking water the morning of. This is part of why we only conduct scans in the morning.

Yes, when you undergo a DEXA scan, you will be asked to wear comfortable clothing without any metal zippers, buttons, or other accessories that could interfere with the scan. It’s important to inform us if you are wearing any metal items, as they may need to be removed.

Yes, we have accredited dietitians conducting these scans and we offer HICAPS rebates in house when you receive your service with us.

We feel very fortunate to be able to provide what is deemed in the clinical world, the gold standard of body composition measurement. Not only are DEXA machines the most accurate form of measuring body composion, our machine is the top of the line and newest version available as of 2024. With this comes more accuracy and quicker speeds to conduct a scan as compared to other models. As with anything there does come error however. There can still be a few % error in DEXA scan readings however with daily recalibration, we do our best to ensure a consistent service and result for you.

You will receive a digital copy of your bone mineral density, body composition and rate of change comparing your results to previous scans (if applicable). The email will also provide you with more information about each section. You also have the option of getting a hard copy on the day.

You will receive a digital copy of your results, with a detailed breakdown of what your RMR is, how the indirect calorimeter works, and other relevant information.  You also have the option of getting a hard copy on the day.

The frequency of DEXA scans depends on your individual goals and needs. For athletes and individuals actively working on body composition goals, scans are recommended to be performed every 3-4 months to monitor progress. For bone density purposes, follow up scans can be done less frequent at ~12months.

A whole body DEXA scan is a quick and painless procedure, typically only taking around 3 minutes. After this, you will then go through the results with the dietitian on site.

The radiation exposure from a DEXA scan is very low and significantly less than standard X-rays. To put this into perspective, an abdominal CT scan is 13,000μsv whereas as a whole body DEXA scan is only 9μsv total (similar amount you would be exposed to flying from Brisbane to Sydney).

Your DEXA scan results will be reviewed and interpreted by a dietitian on site, who can explain the findings in detail and address any questions you may have. You can also visit here for a detailed description.
