DEXA Scan
A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan works by using two low-energy X-ray beams of differing intensities that pass through the body. This allows it to get an accurate measurement of bone density and body composition, including fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral content.
It is the gold standard measurement for body composition.
At the clinic, we use Hologic’s ‘Horizon DXA System’ and takes about 3-4 minutes total for the scan.
A qualified DEXA technician and Dietitian do result interpretation. They will guide you through the results with you after the scan. For more information about interpreting your results, read our blog post here.
DEXA scans are beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including athletes seeking to optimise their performance through detailed body composition analysis, individuals trying to lose weight or build muscle efficiently, and those at risk of osteoporosis who need bone density monitoring.
Factors that can influence your results
It is important to know how to appropriately prepare for a DEXA scan to get accurate results. Factors such as water, food and caffeine can affect the scan results. Please see this blog post under the section “How to Prepare for a Scan” to read more.

Gaining an understanding of your body composition and bone mineral density can help to guide your nutrition and lifestyle habits. If you’re looking to optimise your body composition and see changes between scans, it is recommended to work with a Dietitian to get a personalised nutrition plan.
